Direct debit will always be late?

Since the direct debit pays on the next payment due date, and always pays the 'last statement balance', wouldn't that make the payment always late? Ergo, why can't you set up a direct debit for your CURRENT balance?

    Hi

I'm afraid we wouldn't collect your current balance via direct debit as this would continually change with spending on the account. We always request funds around 5 days before your payment due date of your next statement cycle, when paying off your last statement balance. You can opt to pay the minimum or a fixed amount and we would collect your balance on your payment due date of your next cycle. Your payment wouldn't be deemed late when collected via direct debit. Your billing period starts from the day your statement is issued to the payment due date quoted on the statement.
