Late Payment Fee

I made a large purchase on my credit card and I couldn't afford to pay it all off as I usually do so I can transferred most of the balance and then made a separate payment both before the due date. I hadn't realised Tesco would still try to take the full balance of the statement as well so I amended my DD arrangements so that only the minimum payment would be taken in future.
When my next month's statement came the minimum payment was shown as 0 therefore no payment was made but I've now been given a late payment fee of £12 which is dated when my payment was due (and according to my statement this value was nil)
I don't understand how I can have a late payment fee applied when no payment was requested?
    Please explain
