I noticed a £2.40 Cash Transaction Fee on my Credit Card account and I don't think it should be there. There were two transactions that day, and neither would ordinarily incur any kind of charge (paying for food, then wine, in local bars). How do I query this and potentially get reimbursed?

It downs't feel right to be thinking that I should go back to either of the bars to query this with them without knowing where I stand. Is there anybody I should contact via Tesco?

When you make a cash transaction, we charge a fee of 3.99% and interest at your standard cash transaction rate. This is from the date of the transaction until the date this cash balance is paid.

We consider the following types of payments to be cash transactions: gambling transactions, wire/international money transfers, repaying borrowing, purchasing non-Sterling currency outside of Tesco, payments to prepaid or virtual cards, purchasing gift cards, investments, share trading and spread betting. Have you made any of those types of payments?

If so, you will see interest charged over two statements. The first statement will show the cash transaction fee and the interest from the date of the transaction until the statement came out. The second statement will show interest accounting for the period between the first statement coming out and the balance being paid in full. After this there’d be no more interest applied to this specific transaction.

@ChristopherP I phoned Tesco Bank about this and it seems that a Toby Carvery eGift card that I bought was the reason for the Cash Transaction Fee, and also subsequent interest that was charged just after my initial post. I was told that this is something that has been happening more frequently lately and advised to consider making payments for these kinds of transactions via Debit Card in the future. Fortunately the advisor was happy enough to reimburse these niggly wee charges on this occasion.

Info was good to know as I have been in the habit of making eGift card purchases around this time of year but haven't encountered problems with other retailers (ie. Prezzo, Zizzi) although the advisor mentioned that Miller&Carter, for example, was another that he had seen the Cash Tranaction Fee applied to

I’ve just been looking for information on this as I have an unexpected Cash Transaction Fee.
I bought a Tesco gift card online and had no idea and wasn’t told that this incurred a fee. It doesn’t seem right as it’s not drawing out cash, it’s giving money to Tesco before getting any goods. Effectively I’m using my credit card to give Tesco an interest-free loan and being charged for it!
I looked up ‘Cash Transaction Fee’ and it made no mention of gift cards. This thread is the only place I’ve seen it mentioned.
I won’t make that mistake again!

@johnwilliams77 When this happened to me I found out it was because I had bought a Toby gift card. Because this was something that I hadn't expected and it was the first time it had happened to me I found that Tesco Customer Services were helpful and refunded the fees. Hopefully they might also be able to help you, as I believe they are aware that a lot of folk are falling into this trap unsuspectingly. Good luck!
