How long does an expired card remain 'valid'?

I've just discovered that a Tesco Credit card that expired 18 months ago is still stored with a company I make regular purchases from, and they are receiving payments as they should. The present card has a different number but the odd (to me) thing is that the present expiry date is stored with the old number in the companies accounts system.

Shouldn't Tesco block requests for payment from an expired card?

@PaulBH Hey there, thanks for getting in touch!

This can sometimes happen depending on how the card was stored with the merchant. It's more typical for things like subscriptions via apple/google pay where the merchant can request up to date information from MasterCard (expiry date, long number etc).

    I hope this makes sense.

Thanks. It IS a subscription as it happens, for wine club. I wondered if the card company sent back a token that the supplier stored and that remained valid when the users card was renewed with a different number, rather than storing the actual card number and CVV. The retailer admitted he had no idea how it all worked, but suggested I update the card details anyway which I have done. One of many things beyond the ken of most people.
